Specifically designed for road use.
Lightweight with larger diameter wheels (700mm/27.6 in.) and narrow width tires to provide very low rolling resistance on smooth road surfaces. Rider position is crouched over for improved aerodynamics with drop handlebars.
Three main types of road bikes:
- racing: designed for stability at high speeds, very lightweight
- sport touring: stable handling, the most popular of road bikes
- loaded touring: durable and built for stability and straight-line tracking with heavy loads (40 to 50lbs.)
Road bikes incorporate very advanced technologies and materials all in the name of improving efficiency. Materials such as aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber are used in modern road bike construction.
