Kelowna Ski Shop Says, “Thanks, Norway!”
Research the history of any sport and you’ll likely be amazed at the evolution of technology and equipment over the years. Since we are now a Kelowna ski shop, we took a moment and checked out the history of skiing.
Rock drawings estimated to be 4500-ish years old were discovered at Rødøy, Norway and depicted a man with boards strapped to his feet, holding a stick. (The word “ski” comes from the Old Norse word skíð, which means “stick of wood.”)
Similar drawings discovered in Siberia may be even older! But it was those Norwegians who made the transition from skiing for necessity and began to ski for fun around 200 B.C. We’re sure they didn’t have a local ski shop to help out with bindings, fittings, and servicing (like we offer in our Kelowna ski shop) – but we are ever so thankful that they stuck it out – because we are proud to now offer the latest in technology and designs in Kelowna.
